What size bedroom for a double, king or super king?

The bed itself is only part of it. You need room to walk round it, make it, and open drawers and doors.

The 60 cm column uses MattressNextDay’s rule of at least 60 cm of walking space around the sides and foot of the bed. The 76 cm column uses Which?’s suggestion of at least 2ft 6in (76 cm) between the sides and bottom of the bed and the nearest wall or furniture. BedGuide gives 50 to 60 cm. These are mattress sizes, so add your frame’s extra width and length.

Extra space for storage beds

One wall or none?

A single or small double pushed against a wall needs walking space on one side only. Take 60 cm off the room width in the table for a bed with one side against the wall.

Getting it in

Check doors and stairs too. A standard UK internal door is 762 mm wide (door sizes), and MattressNextDay warns that the staircase bulkhead is the most common problem getting a mattress upstairs.

Questions

Will a king bed fit in a 3m × 3m room?

With 60 cm walkways on both sides and the foot, a king needs about 270 × 260 cm, so yes, before other furniture. With Which?’s 76 cm it needs about 302 × 276 cm, which is tight.

How much space do you need around a bed?

MattressNextDay says at least 60 cm; Which? suggests 76 cm (2ft 6in); BedGuide says 50 to 60 cm.
