Sizes in feet

A 160 × 230 cm rug is about 5ft 3in × 7ft 7in and is the UK’s version of a “5 × 8”. A true 5 × 8 ft rug is about 152 × 244 cm (Rug Kingdom). A 200 × 290 cm rug is about 6ft 7in × 9ft 6in. Rug Kingdom says 160 × 230 cm is the most popular living room size, with 120 × 170 cm and 200 × 290 cm next.

Three rules for any room

  1. Size to the furniture, not the room. Measure the seating, dining or sleeping zone.
  2. Leave a border of floor. 30 to 60 cm in most rooms; 20 cm is fine in a small room.
  3. If in doubt, go bigger. A rug that’s too small makes furniture look as if it’s floating.

Those are Rug Kingdom’s rules. Its best test: mark the outline on the floor with masking tape or newspaper and live with it for a day.

Hallway runners

Choose a runner 20 to 30 cm narrower than the hall, and leave 15 to 30 cm at each end (Rug Kingdom).
