Which size is most popular?

Which? says around four in ten of its members own a king-size mattress, making it the most popular size in its survey, with the double second. MattressNextDay calls the double the most popular size in the UK. Both are common; the right one depends on your room.

Sizes can differ by a couple of centimetres

BedGuide notes that sizes can differ by about 2 cm between makers, so check the label. Emperor is the least standard: BedGuide says its size varies by maker, and MyBedFrames lists larger “giant” beds too.
