Sorrell & Smith use 60 cm per diner along the long sides: 1.2 m seats 4, 1.8 m seats 6, 2.4 m seats 8 comfortably or 10 snugly. A 90–100 cm wide table can also fit one person at each end; 120 cm wide fits two at each end.

Standard height

A standard dining table is about 75 cm high (Sorrell & Smith); Wayfair gives 70–75 cm with chairs of 40–50 cm seat height. Leave about 25–30 cm between the chair seat and the underside of the table (Wayfair). Counter-height tables are 85–90 cm and bar height 105–110 cm (Wayfair).

Room space

Wayfair suggests at least 90–120 cm between the table and the wall so people can walk round, and 120 cm between the table and a doorway. So a 180 × 90 cm six-seater needs a room at least about 360 × 270 cm with 90 cm clearance.
