Imperial sizes (England and Wales)
| Height × width | Feet | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 1981 × 457 mm | 6ft 6in × 1ft 6in | Cupboards and wardrobes |
| 1981 × 533 mm | 6ft 6in × 1ft 9in | Cupboards and wardrobes |
| 1981 × 610 mm | 6ft 6in × 2ft | Where wall space is tight |
| 1981 × 686 mm | 6ft 6in × 2ft 3in | Where wall space is tight |
| 1981 × 762 mm | 6ft 6in × 2ft 6in | The most common internal door in England and Wales |
| 1981 × 838 mm | 6ft 6in × 2ft 9in | Usually gives the opening width needed for wheelchair access (Part M) |
JB Kind says 1981 × 762 mm (6ft 6in × 2ft 6in) is the most common internal door in England and Wales. Doors2Floors calls the 1981 mm imperial family the most common internal door sizes in British homes, and says that 1981 × 762 and 1981 × 686 mm cover most openings in houses built before the 1990s. 2032 × 813 mm (6ft 8in × 2ft 8in) is also stocked.
Metric sizes (Scotland and many new builds)
| Height × width | Note |
|---|---|
| 2040 × 526 mm | – |
| 2040 × 626 mm | – |
| 2040 × 726 mm | Most common in Scotland (JB Kind) |
| 2040 × 826 mm | – |
| 2040 × 926 mm | – |
Doors2Floors: a 2040 mm metric door will not drop into an opening built for a 1981 mm door without altering the lining.
How to measure
- JB Kind: measure the frame opening at the top, middle and bottom, and take the widest. Frames are rarely square.
- Older Victorian and Edwardian homes may have non-standard heights. Measure rather than assume.
- Fire door versions of these sizes are 45 mm thick (JB Kind).
Doors and furniture
A 762 mm door leaf leaves a narrower clear gap once it’s open, so check sofas and mattresses against the narrowest point. See will a sofa fit.
Windows
UK windows don’t have one standard size, so measure each one. For curtains, measure the pole or track, or the window plus 40 cm (curtain picker).
